Power Quality

Transformers, Reactors, and Filters for Power-Electronic Environments

Modern industrial and commercial facilities are dominated by non-linear loads — variable-frequency drives, switching power supplies, LED lighting, and IT equipment — that draw current in pulses rather than smooth sine waves. The result is harmonic distortion, neutral overheating, premature equipment failure, and difficulty maintaining clean power at the point of common coupling. Rex designs and manufactures harmonic mitigating transformers, K-factor rated transformers, line reactors, and harmonic filters to address these problems at the source.

Features and Benefits

Harmonic mitigation at the source. Harmonic mitigating transformers (HMTs) use phase-shifted secondary windings to cancel triplen harmonics generated by single-phase non-linear loads, significantly reducing total harmonic distortion before it reaches the upstream system.

K-factor rated construction. K-rated transformers (K-4 through K-30) are designed with reinforced neutrals, parallel secondary conductors, and oversized cores to handle the heating effects of harmonic-rich loads without derating or premature insulation failure.

Line reactors. AC line and load reactors reduce voltage transients and current ripple from variable-frequency drives, extending the life of motors, drives, and downstream equipment.

Harmonic distortion management. Engineered to help facilities reduce total harmonic distortion at the point of common coupling, supporting utility interconnection requirements and equipment warranty conditions.

Lower operating costs. Cleaner power reduces I²R losses in upstream conductors, lowers transformer heating, and reduces utility penalties for poor power factor and harmonic distortion.

Customization and Engineering Support
