Drive Isolation, Control and Distribution Transformers for Plants, Process Lines and Automated Systems

A new production line may bring 480 V machinery into a 600 V Canadian plant, add several VFDs to an existing bus and place contactors, PLCs and sensors on the same control circuit. Each decision has a different electrical consequence. Features and Benefits

Isolation for drives. Rex drive-isolation transformers provide separate windings for VFD supplies, with optional electrostatic shields to reduce common-mode noise. Select impedance and harmonic capability to suit the drive.

Control voltage that holds during pickup. industrial control transformers sized for the VA of multiple devices energized together and the allowable voltage dip at the contactor or solenoid. Rex medium-voltage control-power designs provide LV control power for MV motor-control applications.

Harmonic duty. K-rated transformers tolerate specified harmonic heating, while harmonic-mitigating designs address selected harmonic effects. Evaluate VFD loads from the expected load profile; IEEE 519 compliance is determined at the point of common coupling.

Enclosures matched to contamination. Type 12 suits appropriate dusty or oil-mist environments, while Type 4/4X addresses washdown or corrosion. Encapsulated construction may suit contamination and vibration; standard ventilated units remain economical for clean electrical rooms.

Customization and Engineering Support

Sizing and configuration. Select kVA, K-factor, impedance and taps from the motor, drive and control-load schedules. Check starting voltage drop, regenerative operating cases and the selected transformer’s thermal duty. For Canadian installations, coordinate applicable CSA C22.2 No. 47 certification, the adopted Canadian Electrical Code and provincial authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

Footprint and installation. Review MCC, machine, wall or floor mounting with the panel builder, including terminal orientation, conductor entry, cooling clearance and service access. Confirm the specific construction is approved for the intended assembly.

Monitoring and protection. Specify winding-temperature sensing, alarm contacts, surge protection or anti-condensation heaters where the plant environment and maintenance response justify them.
