Low-Noise, Harmonic-Tolerant Dry-Type Transformers for Essential Electrical Systems

An imaging suite, operating room and central plant do not place the same demands on a transformer. Rex Power Magnetics builds hospital transformers for 600 V distribution in Canadian facilities, 480 V systems in the U.S., UPS-fed circuits, pulsed imaging loads and spaces where sound or footprint limits the choice. The specification starts with the equipment schedule and the essential electrical system design.

Features and Benefits

Harmonic tolerance matched to the load. K-rated transformers accommodate harmonic-rich UPS, rectifier, and electronic loads. Specify K4, K9, K13, or K20 based on the load spectrum. For three-phase, four-wire systems, evaluate neutral current and specify a 200% neutral where required.

Sound limits matched to the room. Low-noise transformers are available for installations near patient rooms and offices. Set measurable sound limits to NEMA ST-20 and consider mounting and structure-borne vibration. Standard sound-rated units remain economical for remote electrical rooms.

Low losses. Low-loss designs reduce energy use and electrical-room heat. A continuous 1 kW loss reduction saves 8,760 kWh annually before cooling savings. Compare losses at expected loading and confirm applicable NRCan or DOE efficiency requirements.

Seismic certification. Seismic-qualified constructions are available, including HCAI preapproval for covered California healthcare configurations. Verify certification against site demand, installation height, enclosure, and anchorage, particularly for modified or vibration-isolated installations.

Customization and Engineering Support

Sizing and configuration. Set kVA, voltage, taps, K-factor and impedance from the imaging, UPS and lighting schedules. For pulsed loads, review momentary voltage drop and recovery as well as continuous kVA; confirm the applicable CSA C22.2 No. 47 or UL construction and the local code requirements with the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

Footprint and installation. Review floor or wall mounting, enclosure dimensions, conductor entry and cooling clearance against the existing room. A catalogue unit is the economical choice when it fits the loads and space without compromising access or thermal performance.

Monitoring and protection. Specify winding-temperature sensing, alarm contacts, surge protection and BAS/BMS signals only where the facility’s maintenance and response plan can use them.
