Hazardous-Location Dry-Type Transformers for Oil and Gas Facilities

Specify for the classified area, the site environment and the actual load. Rex Power Magnetics builds oil and gas transformers for refineries, compressor stations, terminals and upstream sites, including hazardous-location transformers with CSA certification and UL listing for Class I, Division 2 applications. Enclosure, temperature rise and drive-duty options are selected against the project conditions, not assumed from a standard distribution design.

Features and Benefits

Certification matched to the area. Specify Class I, Division 2 transformers by gas group, temperature code, and jurisdiction. Confirm unit markings and CEC/NEC requirements with the AHJ. A Type 4X enclosure alone does not provide hazardous-location approval.

Construction matched to exposure. Type 3R suits many outdoor installations, while Type 4/4X, stainless steel, and IP66 options address washdown, salt, or chemical exposure. Lower-cost enclosures remain suitable for sheltered, unclassified rooms.

Drive-duty where required. Drive-isolation designs accommodate VFD loads; K-rated windings address harmonic heating, while electrostatic shields reduce common-mode noise transfer. Neither option alone establishes IEEE 519 compliance.

Thermal design based on site conditions. Specify actual ambient, ventilation, and load cycle. Applicable Rex designs use a 220°C insulation system with 150°C, 115°C, or 80°C rise options. Lower rise provides thermal headroom; starting and overload capability require separate review.

Customization and Engineering Support

Sizing and configuration. Match kVA, impedance, taps, BIL and primary/secondary voltage to the load and fault study, including 600 V Canadian distribution or 480 V U.S. systems. Review 4.16 kV and 13.8 kV applications against the selected product’s voltage class and approval scope.

Enclosure and installation. Select enclosure material, certified cable entries, footprint and mounting for the classified area, available clearance and corrosive exposure. Specify a standard enclosure when the installation conditions allow it.

Monitoring and protection. Add temperature sensing, condensation heaters, surge protection or alarm contacts where the operating and maintenance plan calls for them; define DCS or SCADA interface requirements in the specification.
