Transformers for Surface and Underground Mining Operations

Mining environments are among the harshest applications for electrical equipment. Continuous vibration from crushing, conveying, and drilling equipment, airborne dust and abrasive particulates, wide temperature swings, and hazardous classifications in some underground or process installations all stress transformers in ways that standard distribution units aren’t built for. Rex designs and manufactures dry-type transformers, encapsulated transformers, and hazardous location transformers configured for the conditions of mining operations — from open-pit and process facilities to confined underground installations.

Features and Benefits

Vibration-resistant construction. Reinforced core and coil assemblies, robust bracing, and seismic-rated mounting options handle the continuous vibration typical of crushers, conveyors, ball mills, and drilling equipment without insulation fatigue or core looseness over time.

Sealed and encapsulated designs. Encapsulated transformers protect windings from airborne dust, moisture, and corrosive atmospheres common at mine sites and process plants. Suitable for installations where regular maintenance access is limited or undesirable.

Class I, Division 2 hazardous location ratings. Available for installations in classified areas where flammable gases or vapors may occasionally be present under abnormal conditions. Built to applicable hazardous location standards.

Custom enclosures and mounting. Pad-mounted, indoor, outdoor, and mini power center configurations to suit confined underground installations, modular process plants, and remote site deployments. NEMA-rated enclosures available for environmental protection.

High short-circuit withstand capability. Built to handle the fault currents typical of mining electrical systems, including motor starting and large drive applications.

Customization and Engineering Support

Application-specific design. Voltage class, kVA, taps, and cooling configuration matched to the actual load profile, site altitude, and ambient conditions.

Environmental and hazardous location specification. Enclosure ratings, classification compliance, and material selections for the specific environmental and safety requirements of the installation.

Integrated power center solutions. Mini power centers combining transformer, primary and secondary protection, and metering for compact, factory-coordinated installations on mine sites.
