EV Charging

Custom Transformers for Level 2 and DC Fast-Charging Infrastructure

EV charging — particularly DC fast charging — places demands on a transformer that ordinary distribution units aren’t designed to meet. Continuous high-current operation, significant harmonic distortion from charger power electronics, and rapid load swings as vehicles connect and disconnect all stress the transformer differently than a typical commercial or industrial load. Rex designs and builds dry-type transformers configured for these conditions, from single-stall workplace installations to high-throughput public charging hubs.

Features and Benefits

Low-loss core design. Optimized for continuous-duty operation under variable load. Reduces operating temperatures, lowers utility costs over the asset’s lifetime, and improves return on infrastructure investment.

Harmonic-tolerant windings. Engineered to manage the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) generated by EV charger power electronics. Reduces stress on the transformer itself, extends the life of upstream and downstream equipment, and supports compliance with IEEE 519 limits.

Dual-primary and multiple secondary taps. Allows a single unit to accommodate different incoming voltages and adapt to grid upgrades or expanded charging capacity without replacement.

Low-noise construction. Designed for installation in workplace, retail, and mixed-use environments where sound levels matter. Available with reduced-noise specifications for installations near occupied or residential areas.

Compliant with North American standards. Built to UL 1561 and CSA standards. Supports installations to NEC Article 625 requirements for EV charging infrastructure.

Customization and Engineering Support

Sizing and configuration. kVA, voltage class, tap arrangements, and cooling configuration set to the specific charging hardware and grid conditions of your site.

Footprint and installation. Pad-mounted, indoor, and compact substation configurations for sites with limited space or specific siting constraints.

Monitoring and protection. Optional temperature monitoring, surge protection, and SCADA-ready interfaces for remote monitoring and predictive maintenance.
